1850 bohemian blue & gold overlay perfume bottle - museum authenticated

- Κατάσταση: Μεταχειρισμένο
Authenticated and identified by Mgr. Jana Kunešová, glass curator at the Czech Museum of Decorative Arts, confirming its provenance and importance within the heritage of Bohemian glassmaking.
This exquisite Antique Bohemian Double Overlay Perfume Bottle, dating circa 1850, is a rare and authentic example of mid-19th century Bohemian glass artistry, likely originating from Northern Bohemia—possibly from the renowned Neuwelt glassworks. Standing an impressive 25.5 cm tall including the lid, its substantial size alone makes it a rare specimen among perfume flacons of the period.
Crafted using the refined double overlay technique, the bottle features a clear crystal base layered with white opaline and deep cobalt blue glass. Its faceted surface is expertly cut to reveal the contrasting layers beneath, producing a striking visual interplay of color and light. The body is richly adorned with hand-painted polychrome enamel floral sprays, accented with finely applied gilding, demonstrating the exceptional craftsmanship and artistic flair of the era.
The fluted neck, scalloped edges, and hexagonal base are embellished with detailed painted medallions, foliage motifs, and intricate gilded scrollwork. These symbolic floral elements often referenced the perfume's essence, adding a lyrical dimension to the bottle’s design. The tall, original stopper, also overlaid and faceted, displays elegant swirling ribbed patterns in cobalt blue, highlighted with gold and white enamel. A small golden disc crowns the stopper—partially worn—possibly once bearing a maker's mark or monogram, typical of high-end production from this period.
Notably, the stopper has undergone professional restoration, thoughtfully executed to preserve its original shape and character. A minor chip remains on the stopper tip, mentioned for accuracy, but it does not detract from the visual impact or value of the piece.
This remarkable artifact, museum-authenticated, is not merely a decorative item—it is a genuine piece of Bohemian glass history. With its rare dimensions, ornate detailing, and poetic beauty, it stands as a museum-quality centerpiece, ideal for discerning collectors, curated displays, or refined interior settings.
